A student would get angry every time the neighbours played loud music - because the neighbours would turn up the music when they were angry with each other. Why, if they are angry with each other all the time?

A touch conveys physical energy, and to some degree emotional energy. You don't want to touch a freaked out Senser, because they are already feeling too much, and sometimes you may not want to hug someone with messy energy. It is limited at conveying thought and ideas, however.

In order to bring the mental stuff down into the physical realm, some species have developed sound. This is the territory of the animal, it's growling and hissing, conveying force without physically touching. Sounds remain a thing between the physical and the mental - and so they exist in the emotional range. A sound is far better at conveying emotion than a touch, or a word. The same set of words can mean totally different things based on the sounds they are said with.

As such, a hearing gift is a kind of empathy, by listening to the sound you can tune into the emotions more easily. Most people consider sound as a mental thing, but people with a hearing gift, those who are sensitive to sound, are people focused on emotions. They can use the hearing to get emotional information, and so get much more out of the gift than if they were just using it to understand words and ideas.
